About Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’
One year before the promulgation Pope Paul VI’s constitution De Sacra Liturgia, Jean Langlais prepared music for the celebration of the liturgy in the vernacular. He wrote some music for the Mass in French, but also, in English. Thus, Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem,’ composed between April and July 1962, was originally written in English and for use with the vernacular liturgy.

In composing this Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem,’ Langlais intended a simple musical form, composing a Mass for unison voices. The Mass, accompanied by organ, may also “be sung throughout by Women alone or Men alone,” as Langlais indicated in the musical score published first in 1963 by The H.W.Gray Company, Inc.

The original English text was approved by the Diocesan Music Commission, but with the change of English translation in 1970, this original edition published by H.W. Gray in 1963 became obsolete for liturgical use.

Rev. Scott A. Haynes, S.J.C., working with Marie-Louise Langlais, has now prepared a new English edition of Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’ that may be used in conjunction with the third edition of the Roman Missal currently in use in the English-speaking world. Father Haynes and Mme. Langlais have also prepared a Latin edition of the Langlais Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem, making the Mass more universally available for liturgical use. Both the new English edition and the new Latin edition of the Missa ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’ are available through Biretta Books.
