Sixteen feet long, Silk, Hand washable
This item brought to you by the Saint Martha’s Guild of St. John Cantius Church.
Using traditional sinnet patterns found in the sailors’ handbook, and after constructing the recommended braiding equipment, the silk thread has been transformed into extraordinary cinctures. The qualities of silk lend both strength and and amazing softness to the rope. The cincture is finished with full tassels topped with hand crocheted caps.
The process of creating a cincture is a lengthy one. Starting with a skein of silk, a swift is used to wind the it into several good sized balls. Then the silk is carefully measured out on a warping board designed to accommodate the 1.25 miles of thread (no, we're not kidding). After that the silk is loaded onto eight shuttles with 33 threads on each. Then the braiding begins using a marudai to churn out sixteen feet of beautiful rope. Finally the cincture is fitted with tassels topped with hand crocheted caps. These lovely cinctures lend proper dignity to the Mass and would make an excellent gift for a seminarian or your favorite priest.
