The Glastonbury Brocade is a deeply symbolic design created by William Perkins around 1890. It combines powerful Christian images: the Rose and the Crown of Thorns and the Passion Flower. This combination draws upon the ancient legend of the Glastonbury Thorn, said to have been planted by Joseph of Arimathea, a symbol of suffering, mystery, and hope.
Visually, the pattern is richly balanced: intricate without being overly ornate, and meaningful without being heavy-handed. Its repeat size and symmetry make it a strong candidate for vestments, dossals, altar frontals, and banners. It works especially well in larger spaces, where its visual rhythm and symbolism can be appreciated from a distance, but the pattern is also sized nicely for smaller projects like stoles.
Glastonbury is available in six liturgical colors: Ivory, Violet, Red, Roman Purple, Green, and Gold. It’s an excellent all-purpose brocade for those looking to combine traditional English design with enduring spiritual depth.
